THE SUBMARINE ODYSSEY

Protected by an immense coral reef, Belize is a small Central American state, renowned for the magnificence of its seabed which attracts divers from all over the world. This paradise on Earth, covered in rainforest and boasting sublime white sandy beaches, offers a multitude of small islands (called cays) for diving and snorkelling. The most famous site is undoubtedly the Blue Hole, deep blue circle in the middle of an atoll, explored by Captain Cousteau. After a short stay at Belize City, colonial capital, discover Caye Caulker and its sweet pirate atmosphere, or settle in Ambergris Caye, an island popular for its range of sporting activities. Inland, visitors who venture away from the Caribbean coast will discover the archaeological treasures of the ancient Mayan civilisation, such as the impressive sites of Xunantunich, Lamanai or else Snail. The Mayan pyramids, temples and caves, access to which can sometimes be athletic, hold many mysteries, nestled in a wild environment populated by jaguars, macaws and howler monkeys.
