    In the land of a thousand pagodas

    Burma, now called Myanmar, is one of the most fascinating countries in Southeast Asia. The country, bordered by 5 other neighbours, including the giants China and India, is divided into 7 regions which are home to over 130 ethnic minorities, following a rather turbulent historical and political past. It is the land of pagodas par excellence, the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, the 2000 pagodas of the fabulous plain of Bagan, the floating pagodas of Lake Inle, not to mention the thousands of other pagodas that liven up all the villages and punctuate the courses of all the rivers, including the famous Irrawaddy. Burma also boasts nearly 2,000 km of splendid coastline, with the peaceful seaside resort of Ngapali, and more recently the opening to tourism of The Mergui Archipelago with over 800 islands, most of which are completely unspoilt. Precious stones such as rubies, sapphires and jade are highly prized here, but for those on a more modest budget, there are plenty of affordable, high-quality handicrafts to enjoy, such as lacquerware, puppets, embroidered or woven tapestries, and gold leaf.
