    Samara, land of the cheetahs

    Samara is a superb private reserve in the Greater Karoo offering some of Africa’s widest open spaces and an intimate lodge spread across two properties. Set in a contemporary colonial atmosphere, you are invited to discover the malaria-free Eastern Cape province and the reserve’s remarkable conservation efforts. Samara is a three-hour drive from Port Elizabeth in a region of rugged terrain that was once the stage for the migration of thousands of springbok. David Livingstone described it as a land of secret, multifaceted beauty. Four different biotypes are home to a multitude of species, most of which have been carefully reintroduced by the owners (mountain zebras and cheetahs are particularly famous here). Activities on offer include Land Rover safaris, guided bush walks, birdwatching (over 180 species), tracking cheetahs on foot, and discovering Khoisan rock art and fossil sites. To welcome wilderness lovers, Karoo Lodge offers nine superb colonial suites, and The Manor a further four more modern suites on a shared or exclusive-use basis.

    Samara Private Game Reserve is one of South Africa's largest reserves and offers a unique variety of four biomes (savannah, thicket, grassland and Nama Karoo), the opportunity to observe a fascinating and rare species, the cheetah, in complete privacy, all within the setting of a luxurious lodge of the utmost refinement (decor, cuisine, etc.).

    ETHICS

    The owners of Samara, actively engaged in protecting the 28,000 hectares of their reserve, have successfully reintroduced extinct animal species. Among several initiatives, Sibella, a female cheetah rescued in the nick of time from hunting, was reintroduced in 2003 with 2 males and successfully gave birth to 18 cubs.
