    Roça Sundy, the island estate

    At the heart of the rainforest and a vast estate that was once a cocoa plantation stands the charming hotel, Roça Sundy. It is a place steeped in history where traces of the past can still be found today, such as the remains of railway tracks and an old locomotive that used to transport cocoa beans. The 15 comfortable and spacious rooms are spread across two houses with different atmospheres: the Colonial House, which has kept its old-world charm with period furniture, and the Plantation House, with a more contemporary decor. Some rooms feature a terrace or a balcony offering a very lovely view of the sea or the garden. At Roça Sundy, you get more of the feeling of staying in a luxury guesthouse than in a hotel, so authentic and peaceful is the place, paired with attentive service. As for the dining, you will enjoy dishes prepared with fresh, local produce coming mainly from their own garden and vegetable patch, as well as fresh fish caught on the day. Roça Sundy invites its guests to relax thanks to a wide choice of massages and body treatments using the island's natural products.

    THE EXTRAORDINARY

    Marine turtles are part of the island's natural heritage here. Roça Sundy offers you the chance to discover and observe turtles in their natural habitat. From September to April each year, 4 of the 7 species of marine turtles come to lay their eggs on the island's beaches. You will learn all about the nesting, hatching, protection and conservation of these famous sea turtles.

    ETHICS

    Roça Sundy forms part of a sustainable development plan in partnership with the regional government of Príncipe. The restoration work on the estate was carried out by local people, specially trained for the task, using recycled materials and taking care to preserve its original style. The hotel staff have been recruited from within the local community to provide an authentic service: over 90% of the team have completed a one-year training course at the Azores School of Tourism.
