The archipelago at the end of the world

Fiji evokes a distant tropical paradise, lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. How could one imagine that this archipelago of 333 islands, unfurling landscapes of lush forests, volcanoes, mangroves, fish-filled coral reefs and pristine beaches, once sheltered cannibal tribes… Fortunately, today's visitors are welcomed with profound kindness! The Fiji Museum in Suva bears witness to the country's unique history through a collection of old artefacts ranging from canoes to cannibal forks. Besides the capital, whose colonial architecture nurtures a British imprint, the main island of Viti Levu also harbours Nadi, a tourist town surrounded by sugar cane fields and the starting point for excursions to the magnificent Mamanuca and Yasawa islands. Lost inland, the village of Navala is a showcase for Fijian traditions, revealing bures (traditional thatched-roof houses) amidst rolling landscapes. On the southern side, along the Coral Coast, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park protects a fine ecosystem of semi-vegetated dunes whipped by the waves. Travellers in search of deserted beaches will venture to the archipelago's other islands, from floral Taveuni to remote Rotuma, all lapped by turquoise waters and bathed in sunshine.
