    An eco-friendly lodge

    Operated by Wilderness Destinations, Sabyinyo is the first lodge to be owned by a local Rwandan community. Perched at an altitude of 2,150 metres facing the volcanoes and the Virunga Mountains, the lodge comprises 9 cottages designed using local materials such as stone for the floors and walls, and terracotta for the tiles. The cottages are comfortable and spacious, with a decor halfway between classic, colonial and ethnic styles, creating a warm mountain atmosphere enhanced by a real fireplace and beautiful colourful rugs. Staying at the lodge is certainly the ideal base for setting off on a gorilla tracking hike, but it is also taking part in a vast community project that has been woven around all the jobs that keep the hotel structure running, from waiters, cooks, cleaning staff, laundry workers, farmers, guides, carpenters, etc. Children accepted from 15 years old

    THE EXTRAORDINARY

    Following an early morning briefing at the park ranger headquarters, you set off in a group of no more than 8 people in search of a gorilla family. This is a walk of varying duration depending on the location of the gorillas you are looking for. Once in their presence, the group has exactly one hour to observe the life of a primate family, at a distance of about 10 metres, and with all necessary precautions (keeping calm, silent and respectful). This face-to-face encounter with the last mountain gorillas is an unparalleled experience!

    ETHICS

    Wilderness Sabyinyo is a genuine community project that truly benefits the economy and well-being of the community, as well as the conservation of the last mountain gorillas. The lodge is community-owned and is merely managed by Wilderness Destinations. More than 5,000 people benefit directly or indirectly from the jobs generated around the lodge and park activities, as well as from the infrastructure that the SACOLA Trust has been able to develop thanks to the funds raised.
